2010 the year of the Steamroll

Posted by Sleepy Head On 10:15 PM 0 comments

GAHH there is just so much good fucking music right now...
There is too much to listen to, too much to blog about, and to little time for my ears to hear it all. I wish i could spend a week in the hyperbolic time chamber just so I could let some of these amazing sounds im hearing resonate in my skull... This is the world in 2010 where the amount of content might be large, but unlike shitty 2009 the filter has been put on. There is such thing as music critic and taste which perceive as a huge sigh of relief. Shit is popinoff.

First up, NEW Broken Social Scene album holy shit! In 2005 I can clearly remember being lifted up by a crowd of people, and being interviewed by an inebriated by Kevin Drew who forced a confession from me that i was a virgin. Thats right, if you were at that show, i was the kid who said he was a virgin hahahhaha oh fuck. Since that epic last concert I have been struggling to keep interest in the "Arts & Crafts" people who have, to be honest, done nothing but disappoint me for 5 full years. The wheels of karma have swooped full circle and as 2009 licks its callouses and scabs of disorganized and sometimes irrelevant contribution to its decade of music, 2010 is a beaming emblem of a future we can all get hip to. I'm fucking stoked to be alive again, and i'm glad your all here with me. This Broken Social Scene track "World Sick" is epic to say the very least, 6:48 in 320kbps quality...the Emalkay of indie rock so to speak. Free download below.

When ever i'm asked what kind of music i play, i seem to stutter. It would be simple enough to say bass music and maybe that umbrella term is sufficient when describing what it is were actually doing...but IF people were instead asking me what kind of style i like to play...well i would probably go more indepth and explain the awesome combo of bass, beats and melody. I have always been a a lover of the the melodic side of electro and even more so the melodic sounds of dub. It's hard to find a good strong melody these days that isn't over bearing or too cheesy, especially with the rise of 8bit tunes and videogame inspired music thats being produced. That being said, i really like Ikonika. One of the more recent signees of Hyperdub records Ikonika is a cute looking girl who writes deep dub tunes that are fluttering with melodies and rising pads, like butterflies in a jungle. Her tunes surpass influence and genre of the aforementioned styles and now shes got a huge LP being released on Hyperdub.

Below here is the track list of her debut album!

Contact, Want, Love, Have

Ikonklast (Insert Coin)
Idiot
Yoshimitsu
Fish
R.e.s.o.l
They Are All Losing The War
Millie
Sahara Michael
Continue?
Heston
Psoriasis

Look (final boss stage)
Red Marker Pens (Good Ending)

Shutter Island

Just saw the thrilling new Scorsese movie featuring Leonardo DeCaprio and some other all-stars. The movie put me on fucking edge...there is tons of movies that have done what Shutter Island was doing, but this fresh dark Scorsese outlook on the psychological twist thriller is brilliant. There is a dream sequence early on in the film that depicts Leo's dead ex-wife burning from behind; this particular scene has been resonating since i saw the flick and is beautifully and artfully shot. Like the Cohen bros. Scorsese makes no allegiance to genre and really raises the bar with this film. I hope every horror thriller takes a some nods from this one. Two cigarettes up.

On the subject of darkness, i've been rediscovering my love of dark dubs. I played Modern Math in Calgary this past friday and it was fantastic and has re-inspired my thinking with track writing and raising my own bar. Dan and Sandro both slayed the dubs and Droobius opened the night with a steller Ableton mix. I almost fainted after hearing Piranha Piranha new dubs on the big system... Too huge and super fucking dancy....The perfect combination of wobble, electro, and deep dark dub. It's as if Dan and Sandro have been sitting in the kitchen pulling spices from every rack and cupboard and throwing it into a Magic Bullet. Unreal, really inspirers me to keep this shit on the wheel.

First up i got a sexy track by Hexadecibel who hails from Vancouver, BC. This dude a producing machine. His tracks follow a very Canadian west coast feel, mixing up the styles of dark and deep with super fun percussion. When talking about our music scene i think HXDB is a perfect spokes person for "How We Do" out in these parts. Future big name for sure, scope out his blog/website...updated regularly (more then i can say for MS).

My other favorite these days is Kush Arora who was one of the first guests of Modern Math... His tracks are all huge ethno dubs that fuck all over BPM's. Before this amazing wave of lovestep producers like Joy Orbison and Pangaea, Kush has already been blurring the lines of dubstep and techno... What keeps it all together is a sick collection of well sampled ethnic instruments and percussion lines that at first glace felt cheezy but after listening to a lot of his tunes i realized that it's no gimic, rather the glue that keeps his all over sound in place.

Anyways stay tuned, after some long needed school working and getting back into reality ill have some more gems for you all!
